OUR APPROACH

At FBCHL, our vision is to cultivate a community that lives in Biblical Unity as we strive to know and glorify God while consistently maturing and multiplying disciples of Christ. We aim to be a church that is Bible-Based, Christ-Centered, Spirit-Led, and Discipleship-Driven.

In practice, we envision our church as a place that exemplifies the principle of being “Together at the Feet of Jesus” (Luke 10:39 / John 11:32 / John 12:3).

FBCHL is a church that has proudly chosen to affiliate with the Southern Baptist Convention. This partnership enables us to collaborate with tens of thousands of like-minded congregations worldwide to fulfill the Great Commission. In addition to the SBC, FBCHL is affiliated with the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board and the local Desoto Tate Baptist Association. For more information about these organizations, please visit SBC.net, mcbc.org, and desototate.org.

Horn Lake Baptist Church was organized in 1920 with nine charter members. They met in various places until the late 1920s when a parcel of land was given to them. The church occupied this building until 1945 when it was sold. The church then met in Horn Lake Public School until 1947 when the present site was purchased and a building was constructed. A pastor was called and paid $10 to hold services there one Sunday a month. Times were hard during this period because it was the early 1930s, which were the Depression years. Just prior to 1948, the church was busting at the seams, so land on Goodman Road was bought, and a nice brick building was constructed where City Hall is today. On May 3, 1973, the church purchased 8.99 acres of land. A construction loan was secured, and the groundbreaking for a multipurpose building and educational unit was held on September 4, 1977. The new facility was completed in July 1979. In December 1989, the church voted to build a new Worship Center. The groundbreaking service for the Worship Center was held on October 5, 1997, with the first worship service conducted in it on September 27, 1998. The original cornerstone can be seen in front of our current entry tower.

God is the creator and ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three persons – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God.

Genesis 1:1, 26, 27; 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; 1 Peter 1:2; 2; 2 Corinthians 13:14

God the Son, manifested in Jesus Christ, was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin. He was and is God- man who came to earth to redeem sinful man through His death, resurrection, and ascension, and remains today as head of His church (Isaiah 7:14; John 1:1-5; Romans 1:3,4).

The Holy Spirit of the New Testament is the paraclete (Comforter) who lives within all who have repented of their sins and accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior (John14:16,17; Acts 1:8)

Man is made in the spiritual image of God, to be like him in character. He is the supreme object of God’s creation. Although man has tremendous potential for good, he is marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called “sin.” This attitude separates man from God.

Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1, 2

Man was created to exist forever. He will either exist eternally separated from God by sin or in union with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is hell. To be eternally in union with him is eternal life. Heaven and hell are places of eternal existence.

John 3:16; John 2:25; John 5:11-13; Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:15; 1 John 5:11-12; Matthew 25:31-46

Salvation is a gift from God to man. Man can never make up for his sin by self-improvement or good works – only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can man be saved from sin’s penalty. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith.

Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8, 9; John 14:6, 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 5:1

Because God gives man eternal life through Jesus Christ, the believer is secure in salvation for eternity. Salvation is maintained by the grace and power of God, not by the self-effort of the Christian.

John 10:29; 2 Timothy 1:12; Hebrews 7:25; 10:10, 14; 1 Peter 1:3-5

The Bible is the supreme standard for human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions. (Hebrews 4:12)

Heaven
The righteous in their resurrected and glorified bodies shall receive their reward and dwell forever in Heaven with the Lord (Matthew 25:46).

About Hell

The unrighteous will be consigned to hell, eternally separated from God (Matthew 25:46).

The New Testament Church is a body of baptized believers, associated by the Covenant in the Faith and fellowship of the Gospel, who observe the two ordinances of Jesus Christ. The local church is an autonomous body, operating through democratic processes under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. The church subscribes to and supports the teachings and doctrines of the Southern Baptist Convention, and in as far as practical, cooperates with and supports the work of the Southern Baptist Convention, the Mississippi Baptist Convention, and Desoto Tate Baptist Association. (Acts 2:41-42, Colossians 1:18)

Christian baptism is the immersion of the believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the death to sin, the burial of the old way of life, and the resurrection to walk in a new life of fellowship with Jesus Christ. Being a church ordinance, it is a prerequisite to the privileges of church membership and to the Lord's Supper. (Acts 2:38; Romans 6:4)

The Lord's Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby New Testament baptized believers, through partaking of the bread and fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His Second Coming. Serious self examination must occur before partaking of the Lord's Supper. (Matthew 26:26-29; Luke 22:19-20; I Corinthians 11:23-29)

TOGETHER AT THE FEET OF JESUS

FBCHL is committed to grounding all our actions in Scripture. Through a diverse range of Bible studies and engaging, biblical preaching, our teachings and practices are firmly anchored in the Word rather than in human wisdom. Acknowledging the Bible as a perfect treasure of divine instruction, FBCHL strives to know and glorify God by aligning ourselves with its sacred witness.

The temptation for humanity is to place ourselves at the center of the universe. This is essentially what Adam and Eve did in the garden—they prioritized themselves over God. Recognizing our tendency toward self-centeredness, FBCHL is committed to being a church that honors Christ in His rightful position as the center of all existence. After all, "by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together (Colossians 1:16-17)." Jesus is the head of the church (Colossians 1:18). Our mission is to acknowledge Him as our purpose for existence and our reason for coming together as His Church.

Being Spirit-led means that we believe ministry is directed by the Holy Spirit. Every believer shares the responsibility of nurturing a deep relationship with the Lord and is accountable for walking in a manner worthy of Him while following His leadership. The Holy Spirit guides our community to further God's mission, glorify His name, and strengthen our relationships with one another and with Him.

FBCHL is committed to Biblical Unity, as it aligns with God’s will. This unity is vital for evangelism, as Jesus taught that His disciples would be known by their love for one another (John 13:35). It also signifies God’s blessing, as noted in Psalm 133:1.

**What is Biblical Unity?**

Biblical Unity is encapsulated in the acronym TEAM:

**Together**: We strive for one mind, one spirit, and one purpose—knowing and glorifying God (Philippians 1:27, 1 Corinthians 2:16).

**Everyone is Essential**: Every member is vital to the Church's function, as we are one body and a holy temple (Romans 12, Ephesians 2:21).

**Accountability**: We embrace accountability through trusting relationships, which is essential for the Church's holiness, health, and maturity (Ephesians 5:21, James 5:16).

**Mission**: Our mission is to mature and multiply disciples, as commanded by Jesus (Matthew 28:18-20, Colossians 1:28).

Discipleship through relationship

At its very essence, the church is a group of disciples of Christ who gather together to worship our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.  Since we are given the task of making disciples.   EXPAND

Outside the context of the worship gathering, FBCHL will gather for various times of discipleship and relationship building.

In Matthew 4:19, when Jesus first called the disciples, He said "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."
